This week I watched an episode of the very popular shonen series "My Hero Academia" which just entered its 4th season. I have been reading the manga since its first chapter in Weekly Shonen Jump, and was excited years ago when the anime started. It is a long running series, and even at season 4 the anime is still a ways behind the manga, but i am excited to see it adapted for TV. The plot of the series is set in a world of heroes where almost everyone has superpowers. However the main protagonist Izuku Midoriya does not have a power but wants to become a hero. After receiving the power of the strongest hero All Might, Izuku (whose hero name is Deku) enrolls in an elite superhero training high school where he has to fight villains and get along with his classmates. In the episode I watched Izuku works to be accepted by the hero Sir Nighteye (who was once All Might's sidekick) so he can participate in a work-study with a real hero. He is initially brushed off, but his tenacity makes Sir Nighteye relent and accept him for the work-study. This is a really important plot point for this arc's conflict, and I am excited for the action to ramp up! After learning Japanese, I realized just how often loan words are used in anime. Especially this one (inspired by Western comic books) uses a lot, so I can follow the flow of conversations even without subtitles! A major point in this episode revolved around receiving a stamp, which is apparently a very common thing for Japanese business people to have in lieu of signatures. I am glad that by learning Japanese and Japanese culture I can enjoy the media I watch even more.
